Mal Pais translates to "Bad Lands" in the English language, however, as any visitor to the area can attest, Mal Pais is quite the opposite. The town is actually quite tranquil and features a charming tropical landscape surrounding roughly 4 miles of road. Situated on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, Mal Pais is near the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula (which has been called "the Hawaii of Latin America"). At its southern end, Mal Pais borders the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve. To the north, Mal Pais merges with Santa Teresa, where you can find shops, tourist facilities and a vibrant surf scene (the area is known as one of the top surf destinations in Costa Rica, due to its unique conditions and pristine subtropical nature). The coastline of Mal Pais is rocky in many areas with unique volcanic rock formations that create fascinating scenery. While wandering along the uncrowded beaches you will often see flocks of pelicans sailing along the shore or diving for fish. There are also tide pools to explore and large pools for snorkeling at much of Mal Pais' southern shoreline. The adjacent maritime sanctuary of the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve serves as a nursery for many aquatic species, so sport fishing and scuba diving are among the most popular pass-times in the area. The proximity of the Cabo Blanco National Park (located 4 miles to the south) provides for the abundant wildlife and verdant forests in Mal Pais, and is a paradise for tourists and students of biology or ecology. Although there is no entrance to the reserve from the town, you can enjoy the surroundings of Cabo Blanco while walking along the beach or on the hillside. The local "Canopy Tour" is a favorite local attraction, allowing visitors to swoop from treetop to treetop near the park, where it is also possible to explore jungle caves. Guided horseback tours offer admittance to some of the area's hidden highlights - from the hilltops you can take in panoramic views of the shoreline as far as the distant mountains of Guanacaste. Mal Pais boasts a great selection of places to eat and a wide range of activities. Without a doubt, it's a very attractive place to relax and enjoy the golden rays of the Pacific sunset. We look forward to sharing the natural wonders of Costa Rica with our visitors. Plan to spend some time here, but be warned - you might not want to leave! |

Costa Rica is a vacation playground. There is something for everybody in this tropical paradise. The country is rich in beauty; from its lush forests to its tropical beaches there is everything you will want in a vacation getaway. Costa Rica is also known for it plethora of active volcanoes. Volcan Arenal (Arenal Volcano) is the most spectacular. Here you can see the volcano erupt on a daily/nightly basis. There also are beautiful hot springs nearby where you can spoil yourself in one of the many full service spas. If you want a day trip from San Jose, the capital, you can go to Volano Poas. Poas Volcano has a huge crater over one mile in diameter and it also has one of the largest geysers. Volcan Irazú is also a day trip from San Jose - Irazu Volcano is a little less spectacular than Arenal or Poas but still worth the while. If you are interested in a tropical beach Guanacaste is a popular destination. Guanacaste is actually a province but its beaches on the northern Pacific coast are very beautiful. Guanacaste is littered with beaches. You can find secluded beaches like Playa Grande, or if you're looking for more action you can visit the popular Tamarindo Beach. A vacation to Costa Rica is not complete until you visit one of its many tropical forests. Monteverde Cloud Forest is one of the most popular Reserves in the country. However, from the laid back feel of the neighboring town of Santa Elena, you would not expect that it is one of the most visited destinations in Costa Rica. The unspoiled cloud forest of Monteverde is very popular with bird watchers. The Quetzal is of particular importance where you can see the rare and exclusive bird. Corcovado National Park (although much harder to get to) is one of the most beautiful rain forests in the world. |
