The drive from San Jose to Puntarenas takes approximately 2 hours. Upon arrival in Puntarenas there are two options for crossing the bay by ferry onto the Nicoya Peninsula. Once you arrive in Paquera (on the peninsula), it's about an hour drive to Cobano, where you should continue straight at the main crossing and turn left at the second crossing. There are signs showing the way to Mal Pais at the intersection.
